Russian TV presenter, journalist and politician Ksenia Sobchak was hired by Samsung to promote the company's smartphones in the country.
Part of the contract she signed with the manufacturer was asking Ms. Sobchak to be seen in public using Samsung-branded handsets. A standard clause in such a contract would specifically state that the brand ambassador can not be publicly seen using a competitor's device.
Sobchak, 36, allegedly Russian President Vladimir Putin's alleged goddaughter, allegedly violated the above clause when she was seen using an Apple iPhone X when she was interviewed on television. She tried to hide the device during the transmission by covering it with a piece of paper, but that was not enough to stop Samsung from discovering it. The maker is suing Sobchak for 108 million rubles, which is equivalent to $ 1.6 million in today's exchange rate.
In addition to television with an iPhone X, Ms. Sobchak appeared at social events in Moscow holding the device on iOS, apparently in violation of her contract. She ran against Putin earlier this year in the Russian presidential election and, thanks to her reputation as a "party girl", she is known as the "Russian Paris Hilton".
